Letter to Parents Regarding Graduation & Senior Checkout
May 18, 2020
Dear Class of 2020 students, parents and guardians,
We thank you for your understanding in these unprecedented times. As the Covid 19 pandemic and guidelines have been shifting, so has our plans for your commencement. A directive from the Iowa State Department of Education prohibits traditional graduation ceremonies due to the continuing pandemic, social distancing requirements and other health orders. Much research and support from the community went into the drafting of these plans, so we again want to thank you for your patience and understanding as we honor our graduating Senior Class of 2020!
Graduation Day June 5, 2020
We have been busy planning a way to honor our Seniors; West Central High School will provide an outdoor alternative commencement celebration on Friday, June 5, 2020 at 7:00pm. Each senior in the Class of 2020 will have the opportunity to participate in this most unique graduation West Central High School has ever had. The Commencement ceremony will take place in front of the school, in the area of the main entrance. The senior will be presented with the diploma and take part in photo ops in cap & gown while the community and peers celebrate this momentous occasion. We are also capturing memorable moments virtually to share with all seniors, families and our Blue Devil community. We will be streaming the ceremony on Facebook, and recording the livestream for the WC website.
*This is not a required event. We still strongly encourage anyone who is sick or has other existing health issues to NOT ATTEND Commencement. Instead please take advantage of the virtual graduation that will be updated on the WC website and Facebook page.
We will be setting up designated areas to allow seniors and immediate family to:
Pick up cap & gowns and accessories - May 26-29, 2020
Drop off checkout sheets in the main office - Office hours: 8:00am-12:00pm
Arrive at 6:00pm in order to go through a rehearsal - June 5, 2020
Ceremony starts at 7:00pm
Stand with families in the north parking lot. Your spot will be labeled with the senior’s name. (“Pomp and Circumstance” is played)
Welcome by Superintendent Fred Matlage
Speech: Class History - Rosita Hepperle (Student Government) (“I Lived” by OneRepublic is played)
Speech: Class Valedictorian - Emma Tan
Speech: School Board President - Chad Ingels
Receive diplomas and honor certificates in front of the WC school building. (“Olympic Spirit” is played)
After consulting with different stakeholders and other health organizations, we will need to adhere to certain guidelines:
Graduates will no longer be sitting with each other, instead, they will sit with their immediate families in groups of 5.
We increased spatial distancing from 6’ to 8’. Each family section of 3 seats will be spaced 6’ to 8’ apart from the next section.
Family and friends of seniors may sit on the west side of the staff parking lot in designated seating. This will be first come first serve.
We will still have the area for vehicle parking in which people attending can stay in their vehicle and view Commencement from the student parking lot.
Commencement will be live-streamed/recorded on West Central’s Facebook page and eventually on the WC website for those who can not attend.
Only one member of a graduate’s family will be allowed upfront to take a picture.
Seniors will line up in front of the North side of the WC school building in order to form the processional line for vehicles to drive by.
Community members wishing to participate in the vehicle procession in front of the school can line up behind the fire department lead vehicle.
Upon the conclusion of Commencement, groups will be dismissed by family and are asked to proceed straight back to their vehicles.
We appreciate the patience, support, and understanding that went into this plan. We look forward to celebrating the success of our 2020 Senior Class and wish them luck and continued learning in whatever path they choose to pursue!
