My name is Gary Benda and I am fortunate to have been chosen as the Superintendent of West Central Community School District. I have been married to my wife Jill for 10 years. She was a paraeducator in the Iowa City Community School District and also a Service Manager at one of the local HyVees. She has decided to see how far she can go with HyVee. We have two adult children and two grandchildren. We spend as much of our free time as possible seeing them. I was born and raised in the Iowa City area. I have a B.A. in English Education and an M.A. in Elementary and Middle School Education and in Administration from the University of Iowa. I earned my counseling endorsement from Drake University and I am currently finishing up my Ed.D. from the University of Northern of Iowa. I served in the US Army Reserve, Active Duty and the Iowa Army National Guard for 23 years. I spent most of the time as an Infantry Officer. I am also fortunate enough to have served in several ways and many roles in public education. This marks the beginning of my first year at West Central and my 32nd year overall in education. Over the years, I have been an ELA, Math and Science teacher at the 6th, 7th and 8th grade levels. I have been a Guidance Counselor for both middle and high school students. Finally, I have been an Associate High School Principal, Middle School Principal, Secondary School Principal and Superintendent. In my spare time, I like to run, lift weights, read and play with our puppy. I am one of those people who is fortunate enough to love what they do. I a hopeful that our community will come to activities and take the time to introduce themselves and get to know me.
